Dozens take part in Muscatatuck cleanup

VERNON — Dozens of people gathered Saturday for a cleanup of the Muscatatuck River in Vernon and elsewhere in Jennings County, and the good news for organizers is they found less garbage dumped in and along the river than they have in years past.

A total of 38 people registered for the cleanup organized by Friends of the Muscatatuck River Society who gathered for Kevin’s Kleanup, honoring past president Kevin Jayne.

“The trash for the day amounted to 360 pounds. The seven tires … weighed 220 pounds for a total of 580 pounds, a record low; maybe we are working ourselves out of existence,” organizer Tom Moore said.

Scout Troop 541 provided the largest group, with 10 members joining the cleanup, Moore said.

Since cleanups began, 4,075 volunteers have helped the society remove 287,063 pounds of trash and 2,636 tires, Moore said.
