Early in-person voting for primary doubles in final week

Early in-person voting increased during the last week before the May 7 primary, according to the Bartholomew County Clerk’s Office.

A total of 683 people cast ballots in-person at Donner Center from Monday to Thursday, up from 338 during the same period last week and 241 the week before that.

An additional 139 people had cast ballots as of 12:30 p.m. Friday and 435 voters had returned absentee-by-mail ballots.

Overall, 2,318 people had voted as of 12:30 p.m. Friday, or about 4% of the county’s 52,481 registered voters.

“I am pleased that our numbers have improved a bit this week with a total of 1,883 voters casting their in person ballot as of 12:30 pm (Friday),” said Bartholomew County Clerk Shari Lentz.

The last opportunity to vote early in-person will be 8 a.m. to noon Monday at Donner Center, 739 22nd St., the day before Election Day.

Polls will be open at 14 locations on Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Absentee-by-mail ballots can still be hand delivered to the Bartholomew County Voter Registration Office by 6 p.m. Tuesday.

As of Friday, there were still 139 outstanding absentee-by-mail ballots, according to county records.

Because it is a primary, voters must choose either the Republican ballot or the Democratic ballot. It is not possible to vote for candidates in both parties. The winners in the primary will secure their party’s nomination to run for office in the general election this fall.

“I want to urge voters to turn out at this election and exercise their very important right to vote,” Lentz said.
