Prep sports notebook: North, East boys earn call-backs; girls learn regional seeds

Several Columbus North and Columbus East boys track and field athletes have earned call-backs to Thursday’s Greenfield-Central Regional.

The girls regional will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Shelbyville. The top three in each event automatically qualify for state. Beyond that, the next-best three in each event from among the state’s eight regionals will earn call-backs.

The only Bartholomew girl who is seeded to advance from the Shelbyville regional is North junior Carys Glyn-Jones. Glyn-Jones is seeded second in the 800 meters and third in the 1,600.

The Bull Dog girls are seeded fourth in the 4×800 relay, seventh in the 4×100 relay and eighth in the 4×400 relay. Emerson Chambers is sixth in the 100 hurdles, Kyleigh Wolf is sixth in the 1,600, Macy Eaton is seventh in the 3,200, Avery Johnson is tied for ninth in the high jump, Natalie Rohm is 10th and Lily Miller 12th in the 300 hurdles, Sierra Newell is tied for 12th in the pole vault, Tristan Works is 13th in the 800 and Ava Collier is 14th in the 400.

The East girls are seeded 11th in the 4×400 relay and 13th in the 4×100 relay. South Decatur’s Madisyn Danforth is fourth in the long jump.

Meanwhile, for the boys regional, North is seeded No. 1 in the 4×800 relay and No. 3 in the 4×400 relay, and Jace Works and Akot Tong are second and third in the 800. Unofficially, Drew Schiefer is fourth in the shot put and sixth in the discus, Jonny Klaus and Adam Reckers are fourth and fifth in the 3,200, Draven Martinez is seventh in the 1,600, Liam Milne is eighth in the 110 hurdles, the Bull Dogs are ninth in the 4×100 relay and Owen Russell is 11th in the 300 hurdles and 13th in the 110 hurdles.

Also unofficially, East is seeded 11th in the 4×100 relay. South Decatur’s McKinley Shook is tied for fourth in the 110 hurdles and is fifth in the 300 hurdles. Edinburgh’s Jackson Hartwell is eighth and South Decatur’s Owen Arreola 10th in the long jump.

Bull Dogs, Panthers picked for showcase

Two Columbus North and two Jennings County players have been selected to participate in this year’s Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/IHSAA Top 100 Underclass Showcase.

North sophomore Miley McClellan and Jennings sophomore Mollie Ernstes will be in the girls showcase on June 13 at Ben Davis. North sophomore Caleb Ferguson and Jennings junior Carter Kent will participate in the boys showase June 28, also at Ben Davis.

Baseball, softball tourneys start this week

The baseball and softball sectional tournaments start this week. Teams already know the brackets after the pairings were announced on April 28.

In softball, Class 4A sectional host Columbus East will play in a first-round game with Franklin at 6 p.m. Monday. That will be followed by Columbus North and Shelbyville. The East-Franklin winner will play Whiteland in one semifinal contest at 6 p.m. Tuesday, followed by the North-Shelbyville winner taking on East Central in the second semifinal matchup. The championship is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Hauser will play Switzerland County in the first round of a seven-team Class 2A sectional at Milan at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. That game will be followed by Brown County facing Milan, and the winners of those games will meet in the second game of the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. On the other side of the draw, Southwestern (Hanover) will play Brownstown Central at 6 p.m. Monday with the winner facing South Ripley in the first semifinals match at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The championship game is slated for 6 p.m. Thursday.

In baseball, Columbus North will play Franklin at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of a Class 4A sectional at Shelbyville. East Central and Whiteland will play the second game that night, and the winners will meet in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday. The Olympians will face Shelbyville in the second semifinal game that night. The championship game is at noon May 27.

Hauser baseball will play South Ripley in the first round of an eight-team 2A sectional at South Ripley at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Brown County will face Milan in the opener at 5:30 p.m. with the winners will meet in the semifinals at 10 a.m. May 27. In the other half of the draw, Brownstown Central plays Austin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by Switzerland County and Southwestern (Hanover). Those winners will play in the second semifinal game at noon May 27. The championship is slated for 6 p.m. that evening.
