Jennings County Historical Society to host writing workshop

VERNON — A noted author and professor will present a one-day workshop for aspiring writers thanks to a grant awarded to the Jennings County Historical Society and Perceptions Art, Yoga and Mindfulness in Vernon.

South Bend author Dave Griffith, who also is a professor in the Center for University Advising at the University of Notre Dame, will conduct the Jennings County Writing Workshop on Tuesday at the Jennings County Historical Society’s North American House in Vernon. Registration is required and limited to 25 people.

Organizers say Griffith’s visit and workshop was arranged through a grant provided through Indiana Humanities that was awarded in January. The workshop aims to help people tell stories that are important to them.

The workshop “will explore how to organize your writing and resources to get started, how to set goals, and explore writing,” organizers said. “It could be poetry, narratives, captions for photographs, video scripts, or even graphic pictorials.

“This workshop will focus on how we use storytelling to heal. … Griffith will lead you in a series of guided writing prompts whose goal is to unlock the potential that creative writing has to heal ourselves and better care for those who are in need of healing,” according to the Jennings County Historical Society.

Griffith is author of “A Good War is Hard to Find: The Art of Violence in America,” a collection of essays reflecting on how images of violence in film, literature, and news media shape our collective understanding of violence as a means of solving problems.

Formerly director of creative writing at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, Griffith also directs Write Differently, a program offering workshops for young writers on the autism spectrum.
