College sports notebook: Meyer, Aces headed to NCAA; Greenwell named All-Horizon League

EVANSVILLE — Jakob Meyer and the Evansville Aces are headed to the NCAA Tournament.

Meyer, a senior from Columbus North, recorded the final two outs Sunday to earn the save in Evansville’s Missouri Valley Conference Tournament-clinching 8-6 win against Indiana State. He did not allow a hit or a run and walked one over the final 2/3 of an inning.

Cole Gilley, a redshirt junior from Columbus East, allowed one run on two hits and struck out five with one walk over 3 1/3 innings of relief for the Sycamores.

The Aces (35-23) will learn their opponent and destination for the NCAA Regional, while ISU (42-13) will hope for an at-large berth, when the NCAA Selection Show takes place at noon Monday on ESPN2. The regional round is Friday through June 3.

Greenwell named All-Horizon League

FAIRBORN, Ohio — Wright State’s Julian Greenwell has been named to the All-Horizon League first team for the second time in three years.

Greenwell, a fifth-year senior from Columbus East, led the league with a .399 batting average. He had 20 doubles, a triple, 11 home runs, 53 RBIs and 56 runs scored and led the Raiders with a .474 on-base percentage and .699 slugging percentage.

Wright State opened the Horizon League Tournament with a 12-2 win against Youngstown State on Thursday. Greenwell went 1 for 3 with three walks, an RBI and two runs scored.

On Friday, the Raiders (32-24) lost to Northern Kentucky 10-6 and Youngstown State 6-3 to fall out of the tournament. Greenwell went 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored against NKU and 2 for 5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored against YSU.

Burnett notches eighth save of season

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. — Alec Burnett pitched a scoreless, hitless ninth inning to pick up his eighth save of the season Wednesday in Wagner’s 10-8 victory against Delaware State in the opening round of the Northeast Conference Tournament.

Wagner (26-30) lost to LIU 6-3 on Thursday and Merrimack 6-3 on Friday to fall out of the tournament. Burnett, a sixth-year senior from Columbus East, allowed no runs, two hits and no walks and struck out three over the final 1 2/3 innings against Merrimack.

McIntosh collects hits for Hornets

ATLANTA — Kyler McIntosh went 1 for 4 Wednesday in Alabama State’s a 6-3 loss to Grambling State in the opening round of the SWAC Tournament.

McIntosh, a junior from Columbus North, went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored in Thursday’s 11-8 win against Southern. On Friday, he went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored for the Hornets (29-27) in an 11-10 loss to Grambling State.

Harmon records RBI for Reviers

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Reece Harmon had an RBI and a run scored Saturday in Iowa Western’s 10-4 win against Florence-Darlington Technical College in the opening round of the NJCAA DI World Series.

Harmon, a junior from Columbus North, and the Reivers (54-9) were to play Northwest Florida State in an elimination round game late Sunday night.

Smith throws in NCAA West Regional

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Oklahoma’s Tucker Smith finished 19th in the shot put in the NCAA West Regional.
