City officials have appointed a new assistant director of community development.

The city announced the appointment of Paul W. Smith to the job. Smith will work alongside Director of Community Development Robin Hilber.

Smith’s responsibilities will include overseeing the city’s housing study, supporting Hilber in managing Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding, supervising upcoming affordable housing initiatives and coordinating the community homeless initiative to foster relationships with downtown stakeholders, according to a city press release.

Smith will also contribute to Ethnic Expo activities, help local companies work through the tax abatement process and aid in code enforcement supervision.

“We are thrilled to have Paul join our team,” Hilber said. “His knowledge and background match our goals seamlessly, and we are excited to proceed with various projects to enhance the community further.”

Smith has worked as director of operations in the private sector, community liaison in the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) for the State of Indiana and as the chief people officer in the U.S. Navy where he led a team of more than 400 people, city officials said.

Smith holds a bachelor of arts degree from Marian University and a master of business administration from Anderson University. He contributes to the YMCA as a member of the Veterans Engagement Committee. He and his wife, Kristin, live in Greenwood with their children.
