Looking Back – June 17

Two men check their raft for leaks after turning over shortly after the start of a 40-mile rubber raft race on June 17, 1974, from Mill Race Park to Seymour. The pair emptied out the water and continued down the White River.

2014

Veterans of the U.S. Army 95th Division — Infantry Company I, known as the “Iron Men of Metz,” were honored at a ceremony at the Clifty Creek Bridge on U.S. 31 when the bridge was named in their honor. The World War II veterans earned their nickname for their will to liberate the French town of Metz from Nazi forces.

1999

St. Peter’s Lutheran School sixth-graders created a community herb and butterfly garden, which transformed a once-barren concrete walkway into a blossoming sanctuary. The garden was dedicated to St. Peter’s custodians, and a plaque was placed nearby in their honor.

1974

A recipe from the Columbus Cosmopolitan Club cookbook was requested by Family Circle Magazine to be printed in their Christmas Help edition that was published each year and sold nationally.
