‘Take a Kid Fishing Day’
is July 13 at Big Oaks
Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge near Madison will host a free “Take a Kid Fishing Day” from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 13, offering kids 15 or younger and an accompanying adult(s) a free fishing opportunity.
A limited number of free fishing packets will be available along with a free prize giveaway for kids. Free refreshments will be available from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Activity booths open till 1:30 will include a kids casting contest, make your own cane pole, and hover archery. Volunteers will assist kids and teach them about fishing, and a limited number of poles and bait will be available for beginners.
Visitors who have not had the safety briefing this year must go to the office first to watch the required 20-minute refuge safety video and abide by refuge access procedures. All state and refuge fishing regulations will apply for this free fishing day, but state fishing licenses are waived for this event. Participants are asked to check in at the office, 1661 W. Jpg Niblo Road, no later than 1:30 p.m. on the day of the event.
