Looking Back – Oct. 29

Helen Pankow, Bartholomew County recorder, holds a deed which bears the signature of President Andrew Jackson on Oct. 29, 1974. The document was donated to the Historical Society by the Bartholomew County Commissioners.

Columbus East High School student Miranda Kelley held an auction at the Columbus Moose Lodge to benefit Riley Hospital for Children and Columbus Pediatric Associates for her senior project.

1999

Stolen artworks by French impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Brown County artist Adolph Shulz were returned to their rightful owners after they were discovered by Columbus art and antiques dealer William Beltz.

1974

A 144-year-old parchment land grant bearing the name of Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States, was donated to the Bartholomew County Historical Society by Bartholomew County Recorder Helen Pankow. Dating back to 1830, the land grant was made out to Manuel Kisler for public lands in Bartholomew County.
