The sentencing of a convicted killer has been delayed for one week.
Anthony W. Carter, 51, of Indianapolis was found guilty by a Bartholomew Superior Court 1 jury in the April 16, 2023 murder of Ashley E. Neville.
The 40-year-old victim was shot in her rural home within the 500 block of East County Road 650S before being suffocated with a plastic bag.
After convicting Carter on Oct. 28, the six-men, six-women jury deliberated a second time before making their recommendation to Judge James Worton that Carter spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The judge can either accept the jury’s recommendation or determine a different sentence.
Originally set for Wednesday, the hearing was postponed by Worton just hours before it was scheduled to take place. The sentencing is now set to take place at 3 p.m. on Dec. 11.
If they wish, those who were close to or related to the victim are given the opportunity at sentencing to tell the judge how the crime has affected them and their families. While the statements may be written, many choose to read the statement aloud on the witness stand. Some are spoken directly to the convicted criminal.
Each statement, which lasts up to 10 minutes, might deal with the emotional, spiritual, physical or financial impact of the crime on the individual.
