HANCOCK COUNTY — Officials from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department say a 39-year-old Indianapolis man is dead following a shooting at the Amazon Distribution Warehouse located at 7114 W. County Road 200N, Greenfield.

Officials say the shooting was in self-defense during an incident between two employees who worked at the facility.

According to a press release, at approximately 1:45 a.m. Friday, officials with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department responded to the parking lot of the Amazon Distribution Warehouse for a report of a person shot. The warehouse is located near Cumberland and the Marion County/Hancock County line.

Deputies arrived to find one male on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The suspected shooter, another male from Indianapolis, was also in the parking lot with hands raised to surrender to deputies, who secured the suspected shooter without incident and then called for more resources.

Detectives and evidence technicians from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene. The Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office was notified and worked with sheriff deputies throughout the morning.

After an initial investigation of available evidence, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office assures the public that there is no danger to them and no ongoing threat.

“This appears to be an isolated incident between two people, and the shooting appears to be in self-defense,” Capt. Robert Harris said in a press release. “The suspected shooter and witnesses all cooperated with law enforcement. His identity is not being released at this time.”

The deceased male was identified as Isaac Riley, 39, of Indianapolis. His family has been notified. The shooter’s name will not be released at this time, Harris said, but he did note the man was from Indianapolis.

“We do know they were both employees who were getting to work, and there was some type of a interaction between them, we’re assuming a disagreement of some kind, but we are waiting for the detectives to finish up everything,” Harris said.

Harris noted that they are not recommending any charges be filed against the shooter. However, if that changes following further investigation, they will let the community know.

“We’re still talking with officials from the prosecutor’s office, but we believe this was self-defense,” Harris said.

Harris noted that the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Hancock County 911 Center, and Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office all worked together and will continue to do so as the investigation continues.

“We would like to thank all nearby agencies that helped cover other calls for service this morning,” Harris said.

Amazon spokesperson Austin Stowe said in a release to the Daily Reporter, “We are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts are with their loved ones during this difficult time. We’re working closely with law enforcement while they investigate this incident.”

Stowe went on to say that, out of abundance of caution, they have temporarily shut down operations as the investigation continues and will also increase their on-site security personnel as a safety precaution once they reopen.
