Weisner named new Columbus Township Trustee, to be sworn in this morning

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A former Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputy who retired after 36 years in law enforcement is the new Columbus Township Trustee.

Kris Weisner was selected Thursday evening by 30 of the 37 Republican committee members residing in Columbus Township, GOP county chairwoman Luann Welmer said.

Weisner, a 1980 Columbus North High School graduate, was unable to be at Bartholomew County Republican Headquarters when the vote was taken, Welmer said. He was at an event that he had been planning to attend for months, she said.

However, he did provide a three-minute video that was seen by the committee members prior to the vote.

Others considered for the position were Brian Hammack, Lloyd Miller and Allen Smith, according to Welmer.

Weisner succeeds Ben Jackson, who resigned on Nov. 22. Later that day, Indiana State Board of Accounts Chief of Staff Jennifer Guger confirmed there is an ongoing financial investigation into the Columbus Trustee’s office.

The primary responsibility of a township trustee in Indiana is to provide poor relief to residents who need it most. Other duties include funding rural fire departments and maintaining cemeteries.
