Jets prevail, East falls in Hauser tourney

Hauser’s Kennedy Konradi brings the ball down the court against Greenwood Christian Academy in the first round of the girls basketball Hauser Tournament, Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024.

It wasn’t crisp for the Hauser girls basketball team, but it did enough to come away with a win.

The Jets had one final push late in the fourth quarter to come away with a 42-37 victory over Greenwood Christian Academy in the opening round of the Hauser Tournament.

Hauser trailed 32-30 midway through the fourth quarter until a late 12-2 run by Hauser turned the momentum in its favor.

“We all had very good attitudes, and that made our shots fall,” June Berkenstock said of the fourth quarter. “If we missed, we just picked back up and shot even more and they ended up falling.”

With the Cougars face-guarding top player Norah Berkenstock for much of the game, the Jets (9-5) had contributions across the board.

Abby Manley finished with 11 points to lead Hauser. June Berkenstock and Kennedy Konradi scored seven apiece, and Norah Berkenstock added six.

“I think that’s the morale of the story, we made just enough plays to get a win, and in tournament play, you want to win and advance,” Hauser coach Kyle Shipp said. “We’re happy about the win. We got some things to clean up, and we’ll be better (today) hopefully moving in to final four of this tournament.”

While the Jets move to play Southwestern (Hanover) in the semifinal round at 4 p.m. today, Columbus East will play in the consolation round after falling to the Rebels 44-32 in the opening round.

Kimberly Carothers and Lola Watkins led the Olympians with nine points each. Kenzie Cheek finished with eight, and Ella Anthis added four.

The Olympians were plagued by a lot of miscues.

“We can’t make free throws. We turned the ball over too much. We just got to get better,” East coach Kaitlyn Phillips said.

East (0-11) will take on Greenwood Christian Academy in the first consolation game at noon today.

South Decatur fell to Madison 50-37 in the opening round and will play Paoli in the second consolation game at 2 p.m. today.

Makayla Somers and Raegan Benge finished with nine points each to lead the Cougars (7-7).
