Jennings County officials have been notified that the county will receive $8,980 in federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) funds.
The EFSP is a FEMA-funded program that supplements ongoing work of local nonprofit and governmental social service organizations to provide shelter, food and supportive services to individuals and families who are experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, hunger and/or homelessness.
The EFSP National Board allocates funding to counties and cities around the country and consists of several organizations and agencies, including United Way Worldwide, The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, among others.
A Local Board comprised of representatives of these National Agencies will determine how the funds awarded to Jennings County are to be distributed among local qualifying agencies.
To qualify, local agencies must:
- be private voluntary non-profit or unit of government
- be eligible to receive federal funds
- have an adequate accounting system
- practice nondiscrimination
- have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs
- if they are a private voluntary organization, have an active voluntary board of directors
The Jennings County Emergency Food & Shelter Program (EFSP) Board is encouraging local agencies that meet requirements to apply online at efsp.jcunitedway.org for the funds. The deadline for applications is Jan. 31.
The program is administered by Jennings County United Way, 707 N State St., North Vernon, 812-346-5257.
