Prep sports notebook: Locals named IFCA All-Region, Academic All-State

Several local football seniors have been selected to this year’s All-Region 10 Team by the Indiana Football Coaches Association.

Columbus North running back Gino Prescott, offensive lineman Bryce Harriman and linebacker Jose Ramirez made the team, along with Columbus East tight end-linebacker Jared Brooks and South Decatur running back-linebacker Corbin Johnson.

All-Region selections are eligible to be picked for the annual North-South All-Star Classic.

Locals make IFCA Academic All-State

Several local football players have been named Academic All-State by the Indiana Football Coaches Association.

Columbus North’s Jayce Emmitt, Bryce Harriman, Jackson Haston, Jack Johnson, Owie Kibler, Sam Mormino, Jose Ramirez and Luke Russell were named to the team, along with Columbus East’s Cam Herron and South Decatur’s Corbin Johnson.

Harriman commits to UIndy

Columbus North senior offensive lineman Bryce Harriman announced his commitment to continue playing football at University of Indianapolis.

Harriman was an All-Conference Indiana, All-Region 10 and Academic All-State player for the Bull Dogs.

East’s Phillips earns exemplary report

Columbus East girls basketball coach Kaitlyn Phillips has been recognized with an Exemplary Behavior Report from the IHSAA.

Phillips and New Albany coach Shelby Gliebe were cited by game official John VanWagner and his crew for setting a high standard of behavior and integrity on the sidelines at their Jan. 18 game. VanWagner praised their composure, respect for the game an positive influence on their players.

“I would like to commend Coach Kaitlyn Phillips of Columbus East and Coach Shelby Gliebe for their extreme professionalism and great use of sportsmanship while coaching their respective teams during the varsity basketball contest on Saturday afternoon,” VanWagner wrote in the report. “The way they handled their duties during the game makes me confident they will soon have great success and continue to be a pleasure to officiate.”

Boys wrestling tournament begins Saturday

The boys wrestling sectional is slated to begin Saturday.

Columbus East and Columbus North will wrestle in the Jennings County Sectional beginning at 9 a.m. Finals likely starting around 2 p.m.

The top four placers in each weight class will feed into the Feb. 8 Jeffersonville Regional. The top four placers in each weight class from the regional will feed into the Feb. 15 Evansville Semistate. The top four placers in each weight class from the semistate will earn a berth in the state finals competition, which begins Feb. 21 and concludes Feb. 22 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
