State attorney general’s office trying to return unclaimed property to Hoosiers

As of the last week in January, there was $12,118,786 in unclaimed property in Bartholomew County.

That amount is up from about $328,000 since the end of 2024, according to the Indiana Attorney General’s office. The total represents 1.2% of the total amount of unclaimed property in all 92 Indiana counties, the office states.

An update on the amounts was brought to Columbus by Parker Fletcher, a representative of Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita. The Unclaimed Property Unit is one of eight divisions within Rokita’s office.

Speaking to the Bartholomew County commissioners, Fletcher said 151,235 individual claims have been made by local residents on the property. The office returns over $1 million of unclaimed property to Hoosiers every week, achieving a record of more than $81 million in 2023 alone, Fletcher told the commissioners.

Unclaimed property is essentially any financial asset with no activity by its owner for an extended period of time, Fletcher told the commissioners.

“This might be anything from unclaimed wages, commissions, savings accounts, checking accounts, unfiled checks, or mailed checks that are never cashed,” Fletcher said. “If a relative passes away, neglects to pass money down to an heir, and you can prove you are a legal heir, the money can be transferred over to you.”

Other unclaimed property includes stock dividends, insurance proceeds, underlying shares, certificates of deposit, refunds, money orders and safe deposit box contents.

Each claim requires a minimum of a completed and signed claim form and a copy of a photo identification.

To determine the specific requirements of your claim, Fletcher says you need to review the email sent to you after your make your initial claim. The items required will be listed a claim form attachment.
