Berniece “Bernie” Carol (Starnes) Smith, 86, of Seymour passed away at Schneck Medical Center Wednesday, February 5, 2025, after a brief illness. She was born in Norman, Indiana on June 20, 1938, to the late Earl and Hazel Pauline (Branaman) Starnes.
Berniece married her sweetheart Myron Smith on November 22, 1958, at First Baptist Church of Seymour, and he survives. Berniece served as a Deaconess and as a member of the Counting Committee at First Baptist Church. She was a 1956 graduate of North Vernon High School. In 2001, she retired from her bookkeeping duties at Cummins Engine Company after 30 years of service. Along with Myron, Berniece loved watching sports, especially Indiana University basketball. She also enjoyed watching hunting shows. Berniece loved flower gardening, antiquing, and dish collecting. She enjoyed the music of Elvis and Michael Bolton.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of more than 65 years, Myron Smith; children, Teresa Arnett and Myron Smith Jr; grandchildren, Matthew Mowery, Alyshia Smith, Cara (Joey Rollins) Stroud, and Sydney Smith; great grandchildren, Treyton Ream, Kamryn Rollins, Karson Rollins, Paisley Rose Lacerda, and Raelynn Jo-Lee Lacerda; and brother, Thomas Starnes.
She is preceded in death by her parents, listed above; and her brother, Franklin Starnes.
Funeral services for Berniece will be held Monday, February 10, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. at Voss and Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, 316 North Chestnut Street, Seymour. Pastor Larry Tingle will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Berniece will be laid to rest immediately following at Riverview Cemetery.
