Edinburgh police warn about scam

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh Police officers are warning the public about a scam using the agency’s phone number and claiming to be an agent with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

The scammer is using spoofing software to duplicate Edinburgh Police’s primary phone number, 812-526-2636. People are reporting the scammer identifies himself as Lt. Garvey with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol. This is a scam, Edinburgh Police posted on Facebook.

The caller asks for personal information, but police are warning people to not share any personal information and to hang up the call. Anyone who has already given any personal information to this individual is asked to call their local police to make a report and to take precautions against identity theft, such as locking down credit, police said in the post.

If anyone has any questions about the scam, call Chief Doyne Little at 812-526-3500 or email at dlittle@edinburgh.in.us.
