Thomas A. Clerkin, Arvin Industries corporate vice president of organizational and leadership development, was elected chairman of the Community Education Coalition. Clerkin replaced Mark Chesnut, who resigned after his move to Charleston, S.C.

The 11th annual Indiana State Conference of the International Reading Association (IRA) was held at Columbus East High School, where Marianne Wright was named Outstanding Educator and Teacher of the Year. Wright taught at Wilson Middle School in Muncie.
