The Columbus Interfaith group and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are collaborating once again for the second annual Interfaith National Day of Prayer, on May 1. This event will see leaders of various faiths coming together and uniting in prayer for peace in the country and the world, according to organizers.

The Interfaith National Day of Prayer will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. May 1 in Southside Elementary School’s auditorium.

Leaders from Buddhist, Catholic, Hindu, Islamic, Protestant and Pagan faiths, in addition to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will assemble and each offer a prayer reflecting their respective beliefs. Musical selections from various faiths will also be performed.

Organizer Amy Jones said she observed happy people as they left the auditorium last year.

In his speech at last year’s event, James Shoaf, an organizer for this year’s event, said that we must build bridges of friendship so the fruits of faith, such as love, kindness, forgiveness, mercy and understanding, can be shared with the other side.

“Our nation is facing tremendous challenges that pull at the threads of our diverse religious community,” the Rev. Nic Cable of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus said. “We must pray and work for a more peaceful and just society where the tapestry of our country remains intact with all that unites us as Americans.”
