Garden City Christian Church welcomes new children’s and family minister

Molly Black has followed God’s voice from the Sunshine State to Bartholomew County to serve as Garden City Christian Church’s new Children’s and Family Minister. Beginning in her new position on April 27, she said she can’t wait for the opportunity to share Jesus with the kids.

“… I’m on fire to get started and I know it’s going to be work, but God wouldn’t have put me here if He didn’t think I could handle it,” Black said.

According to Garden City Christian Church’s website, Black comes from Kissimmee and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in non-profit administration from Johnson University. Black said she grew up in the church, and while she had volunteered with kids before, she never thought she would end up working with kids as a job until she went to Missouri and began working at a boys and girls club.

“That really kind of opened my eyes that God has called me to at least work with children, and at the time I didn’t think it would be in a church setting, in children’s ministry,” Black said. “I then moved back to Florida and I started working at the church I grew up in as their children’s assistant, and that’s really when God opened my eyes and I was like, ‘oh, this is what I’m meant to do.’”

After receiving word of this job with Garden City Christian Church and completing a few interviews, Black packed her bags and moved to Columbus. She said she has started her new job with observing to see what already works, what the church needs and how she can help accomplish those needs. Black said she has also been thinking about family events that can be hosted at the church.

“… I’m also not only thinking of the kids but their parents too. What can Garden City, what can I do, to give these parents resources to disciple their children?,” Black said. “And… I’ve also been thinking about the volunteers and how can I make them feel appreciated because honestly, could not pull it off without the volunteers.”

Lead minister Brian Gilroy said Black will not only work with kids from nursery to fifth grade, but she will also oversee partnering with parents so they know ways they can introduce Christ into their household and will be responsible for any outreach regarding families. Although she only started fairly recently, he said Black has hit the ground running and he is very excited she is here.

“She’s young, she has new ideas. I think she will provide some incentive for us as a church to consider new ways to reach out to our families and into the community,” Gilroy said. “She’s very excited, she’s already shared with me some of her ideas of what she is working on. I’m just thrilled to have a ministry partner in Molly and glad we could bring her into our community to get established and help our community grow through the children’s ministries as well.”

Black said she is so thankful for the congregation, elders and staff, saying they have all very supportive and have prayed for her. She said she has enjoyed her time in Columbus thus far and thinks it is a beautiful city.

“It feels like home,” Black said.
