College sports notebook: Rutan makes All-Tourney team; Nusterer, Hawaii fall in NCAA semis; Gilley gets win for IU

Maddi Rutan was named to the ASUN Conference All-Tournament team after leading Eastern Kentucky to the finals before falling to top-seeded North Florida 5-4 Saturday.

Rutan, a sophomore from Columbus North, threw a complete-game seven-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks in Thursday’s 2-1 opening-round win against Florida Gulf Coast.

Friday, Rutan allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and went 1 for 2 with an RBI in a 2-1 loss to North Florida. She then went 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored in a 9-4 win against Stetson.

Rutan allowed five runs on 11 hits in five innings and went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run in a 5-4 loss to North Florida for the Colonels, who finish the season 38-16.

Sitterding collects hit for Cougars

Julia Sitterding went 1 for 1 Thursday in College of Charleston’s 3-0 loss to Hofstra in the Coastal Athletic Association Tournament.

Sitterding, a junior from Columbus East, and the Cougars finish the season 31-24.

Nusterer, Hawaii fall in NCAA semis

Kurt Nusterer and the Hawaii men’s volleyball team made it to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament before falling to UCLA in three sets Saturday.

Nusterer, a senior from Columbus North, recorded nine kills and three blocks in Thursday’s 25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23 Elite Eight win against Penn State.

Saturday, Nusterer had one kill for the Rainbow Warriors (27-6) in a 25-14, 25-23, 25-23 loss to UCLA.

Gilley records win for Hoosiers

Cole Gilley started on the mound and earned the win for Indiana in Sunday’s 14-4 Big Ten win against Purdue.

Gilley, a fifth-year senior from Columbus East, allowed three runs (none earned) on five hits in six innings for the Hoosiers (29-22, 14-13). He struck out six and walked one.

Gilley also pitched a scoreless, hitless inning of relief in Friday’s 8-0 win against Purdue. He struck out one and walked one.

McIntosh notches hits for Hornets

Kyler McIntosh celebrated his senior night Saturday by going 1 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored for Alabama State (26-27, 18-9) in a 17-3 SWAC win against Alcorn State.

McIntosh, a senior from Columbus North, went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs in a 10-1 first-game win and 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run in a 12-2 second-game win in Friday’s doubleheader sweep of Alcorn State.

McIntosh went 1 for 3 with a run in Tuesday’s 16-4 loss at Jacksonville State.

Harmon helps Seattle beat WSU

Reese Harmon went 1 for 3 with a run scored Tuesday in Seattle’s 6-4 win against Washington State.

Harmon, a junior from Columbus North, went 2 for 2 with a double and a run for the Redhawks (18-31, 6-15) in Saturday’s 4-2 Western Athletic Conference loss to California Baptist.

Bode collects hits for Greyhounds

Austin Bode went 2 for 5 with three RBIs Wednesday in University of Indianapolis’ 9-8 win against Drury in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

Bode, a redshirt junior from Columbus North, went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI in Friday’s 10-7 loss to Missouri-St. Louis. He scored a run in Friday’s 10-8 loss to Drury.

The Greyhounds (30-22) will play Ashland in the NCAA Division-II Midwest Regional Thursday in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Redmon, Harmon compete for Grizzlies

Dyllan Redmon went 1 for 3 with an RBI Thursday in Franklin’s 3-2 loss to Rose-Hulman in the first round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

Redmon, a junior from Columbus North, was hit by a pitch in Friday’s 10-3 loss to Transylvania. Luke Harmon, a sophomore from North, allowed three runs on five hits and struck out seven in six innings of relief for the Grizzlies (21-20).

VanDeventer ties for 13th in CL tourney

Luke VanDeventer tied for 13th individually to lead Huntington to a seventh-place team finish in the Crossroads League Championship.
