Mill Race Theatre to offer audition workshop for upcoming production

The Mill Race Theatre Company will host an audition workshop on May 17 for its upcoming production of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” All ages are invited to participate.

Production manager Allison Kunkler said the audition will help participants prepare before formal auditions are held on May 31 and June 1. Two workshops will be held for different age groups at Dancers Studio, Inc., with a workshop for those ages 8 to 12 from 1 to 2 p.m. and the second workshop for those age 13 and older from 2 to 4 p.m.

Both workshops will be led by Indianapolis-based actor, singer and dancer Brittany Michelle Davis, according to Mill Race Theatre Company’s website. The 13 and over workshop will discuss auditioning aspects such as marking cuts and what to wear, and participants are required to bring a 16-32 bar cut of a song to sing.

The children’s class for 8 to 12 year olds does not require participants to prepare a song as music will be shared with all the kids for them to learn together. This workshop will also not include movement or dancing, but kids are still asked to wear comfortable clothes.

For both workshops, it is recommended, though not required, to wear or bring socks as shoes will need to be taken off to enter the dance studio room, according to organizers.

“It’s encouraged for people who are interested in auditioning that may be just want helpful tips and tricks, to get them more comfortable if they’re nervous,” Kunkler said. ”With it being a family-oriented production, having a lot of kids involved, they get super nervous, and so trying to kind of settle those little jitters before they come to our big auditions and they feel super overwhelmed, which they don’t need to be, but it’s just inevitable. People are always nervous to perform in public.”
