In commemoration of National Police Week, a memorial to honor law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty was held at 9 a.m. Friday at the Public Safety Plaza near Second Street and Jackson Street in downtown Columbus.

The Columbus Police Department, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office, and the Indiana State Police participated to honor and pay respect to the 165 law enforcement officers that died in the line of duty in 2024, including two from Indiana.

They were Deputy Sheriff Fred Anthony Fislar of the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office and Corp Brandon Schreiber of the Newton County Sheriff’s Department. Fislar was electrocuted while investigating a crash scene. Schreiber died from gunshot wounds received during a vehicle pursuit.

The memorial service is traditionally set for the Friday of National Police Week.
