Thursday morning’s and afternoon’s rain necessitated the move of the Columbus North girls tennis sectional indoors to Tipton Lakes Athletic Club.
That didn’t seem to slow down the host and 18th-ranked Bull Dogs, who cruised to a 5-0 win against previously undefeated Greensburg. North will play Edinburgh, a 3-2 winner against Columbus East, in the sectional final at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Aya Saad blanked Mary Harmon 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Lucy Bergman beat Emma Kuntz 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Molly Richards downed Adelynn Stier 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the Bull Dogs (13-6).
North’s Annabelle Sun and Nino Akhalaya topped Leah West and Mya Comer 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Grace Conner and Lizzie Bodart defeated Averi Helms and Kiera Kennedy 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
“Greensburg was a nice team,” North coach Kendal Hammel said. “They were undefeated for the year, but they haven’t faced the competition that we have. I thought with the changes in the circumstances and playing indoors, we did a nice job of taking care of business all the way down.”
The other semifinal was much closer. The Olympians (1-17) took the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches with Lauren Degner beating Gracie Lawson 6-0, 6-1 and Bruna Carreira topping Bella Turner 6-1, 6-2.
The Lancers came through with wins in the other three matches. Sophia Pace beat Lilli Smith 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, Kinzie Purvis and Kaydra Peters topped Saya Hauser and Zoe White 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles and Olivia Aguayo and Lexi Stroud defeated Stefani Christopher and Luci Morales 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
With her win at No. 1 singles, Degner will advance in the individual singles tournament.
