COLUMBUS
Michael L. Ross of Columbus, Indiana, 80, died at 9:09 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2025 at his home. Born in Indianapolis on January 9, 1945, Mike was the son of Roy and Jewell Ross of Scipio, Indiana, both of whom preceded him in death.
Mike was a popular and widely known hairstylist in Columbus for almost 62 years, starting with his graduation from Approved University in Indianapolis in 1963. Mike and his mother Jewell owned and operated La Mode in Columbus for many years in two different locations before closing. Mike then moved to the Salon of Coiffures where he spent several years, and later relocated to Legends salon, where he celebrated his 50th year as a hair stylist. After owner Linda Rhoades retired and Legends closed, he worked at Shear Perfection before ending his career at the Cameo Room in 2025, where he was warmly received and supported by the Cameo stylists. He also spent short stints in Greenwood and Venice, Florida during his long career.
Those who knew Mike remember him as a lively, warm, and talented stylist, and an extraordinary person and friend with a flair for life. Among the many things he loved were well-prepared food served in beautiful settings, playing bridge, going to the casino, and travel to Florida, Chicago, and Las Vegas. Mike will be dearly loved and sorely missed by those whose lives he enriched.
Mike is survived by his brother, Bill Ross (Kay) of Scipio; his sister, Janice Olds (Merrill) of Queensville; and by his niece and nephews, Jeff Olds (Jill) of Shelbyville, Todd Olds (Karen) of Indianapolis, and Michelle Smith (Keith) of Vernon. Mike’s partner of 47 years, Mike Van Fossen, preceded him in death, and his best friend of nearly 60 years, Nancy Hoover, who survives, was with him through it all.
In keeping with Mike’s wishes, cremation will occur, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations in remembrance of Mike should be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, 2626 17th Street, Columbus Indiana 47201.
