Columbus will be one of 20 Indiana towns and cities taking part in a “No Kings” rally on Saturday, meant as a protest against President Donald Trump and his administration.
More than 100 groups and 1,500 areas will be participating in what organizers say will be the largest such demonstration since Trump’s second term began, according to the rally’s website.
Columbus Community United is organizing the local effort, as they’ve done for a couple other similar events this year, on the same day the president is planning a “Grand Military Parade” on the United States Army’s 250th anniversary, which is also Trump’s 79th birthday.
It’ll take place on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. mostly on the steps Columbus City Hall, with a march around the courthouse planned from 1:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
“No Kings is a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies,” an event flier reads. “… Come listen to speakers, music, get information from local groups helping and advocating for the community, and participate in a sign making competition and other activities.”
It also noted that “a core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.”
Some of the musicians playing include Danny Clarks’ Band, Chris Kevitt and Alishia Zinn.
Speakers during the event will cover immigration, LGBTQ rights, veterans, Job Corps and standing up for democracy, among others. There will also be a sign competition towards the end of the rally with prizes to be determined.
Organizers stressed this will be a peaceful rally—as the other’s have been—and that they are in contact with the Columbus Police Department to ensure the safety of those attending.
People are also asked to bring canned goods for donation to Indiana Youth Group. Breakfast foods, microwaveable single meals, ramen, canned fruits and canned chicken are the biggest needs currently, but all donations are welcome, organizers said.
