JACKSON COUNTY — Republican precinct committeemen and committeewomen will meet on June 30 in Brownstown to select a new Jackson County prosecutor.
Jeff Chalfant, the current prosecutor, recently announced his decision to resign, but it didn’t become official until it was submitted to Gov. Mike Braun’s office, as prosecutors and judges are state employees.
“Jeff told me that he was planning to resign a few weeks ago,” county GOP chair Amanda Lowery said. “Jeff’s notification to me indicated that his last day will be June 30.
She said she sent out notices to precinct committeemen and committeewomen.
Lowery said a couple of attorneys, Lynsey Fleetwood and Jordan Lorenzo, have expressed interest in the position. Lorenzo is a deputy prosecutor in the Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s office.
Fleetwood told The Tribune on Tuesday about her plans to file for the position.
Candidates have until 72 hours before the start of the caucus to file.
Chalfant went to work at the prosecutor’s office in Brownstown in 2008. The prosecutor at that time was Jackson Circuit Judge Richard W. Poynter.
He was elected prosecutor during a caucus in 2018 to replace Prosecutor AmyMarie Travis after she became Jackson Superior Court I judge.
“I filled out her term and was elected prosecutor in 2022,” Chalfant said.
He said his decision to retire was motivated in part by the thought of transitioning toward retirement after serving 17 years with the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Chalfant said he and his wife plan to move out west where he will plans to find work as a deputy prosecutor.
The time for the caucus was not available Saturday morning.
