Sheriff’s office replacing damaged vehicle

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department is getting a replacement truck from a North Vernon auto dealer to replace one that was recently totaled.

The Bartholomew County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a quote from Country Chevrolet for a 2023 Chevy Silverado at $46,900.

Sgt. Andrew Whipker said one of the department’s Dodge Ram trucks was totaled in an accident about three weeks ago. County Chevrolet had been purchasing demo police vehicles directly from GM for the past several months, and had sold some to the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office, which is how Whipker was made aware of the 2023 Silverado.

“When I reached out, I found out that they had this truck on their lot,” Whipker explained to commissioners.

While the vehicle is a 2023 model, it only has 1,700 miles on it, Whipker said.

Whipker noted the 2023 Silverado “actually is more truck than what we actually would spec if we were buying this new.”

The vehicle is already pursuit-rated, meaning it’s equipped to handle demands of high-speed chases, Whipker said, but the truck will still need police lights and radio.

The sheriff’s department earlier this year obtained five 2025 Chevy Silverados from Country Chevrolet for $251,215.80. The commissioners approved the purchase during a Jan. 9 meeting.
