Columbus Board of Public Works and Safety condemned a home at 911 and 912 Chestnut St. after a fire damaged the structure on June 20.

The board voted to condemn the structure on Tuesday, saying the property is “unlivable.”

After the board condemned the property, the homeowner has 30 days for the insurance adjustor to review the property and decide whether the home must be demolished or can be rebuilt. If the adjustor decides the home must be demolished, the homeowner will have 30 days to act on that order. If the home can be rebuilt, the homeowner has 30 days to create a plan of action to rebuild.

Board members said in the meeting that it is difficult to envision the property being rebuilt because of the amount of damage it sustained during the fire.

Currently, the three residents of 911 Chestnut St. and five residents of 912 Chestnut St. are receiving shelter assistance from the Salvation Army.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but a cause has not been released.
