Thursday is the last day to sign up for this weekend’s men’s city golf tournament.
The entry fee is $60 to walk and $75 with a cart. Golfers must be 14 or older to participate. Entry fee forms can be picked up and filled out at Greenbelt Golf Course or by visiting the parks and recreation website at columbusparksandrec.com/golf and returning the form to Greenbelt.
The tournament will be contested at Greenbelt.
The first round will be Saturday, and the final round on Sunday, with players teeing off from the morning to the early afternoon. There will be four flights in the event — championship, first, second and senior. There will be prizes and certificates for the top three in each flight.
“It’s been very positive. It’s the way the city tournament used to be,” Greenbelt pro Keith VanDeventer said. “It’s pretty simple. Guys that want to play here will play here and the ones that don’t, they won’t.”
Keith VanDeventer said around 40 players have signed up for the event. The deadline to sign up for the tournament is Thursday evening, and pairings will be sent out shortly after.
VanDeventer’s son Luke, a former Columbus North and current Huntington University golfer, is the defending champion.
Instead of having the tournament in mid-July this year, it will be contested before the Fourth of July holiday.
“We moved up the date to get ahead of Fourth of July. I know a lot of people take off and leave at that time for vacations, so we were just trying to get it done here by the end of June,” Keith VanDeventer said. “It’s an experiment where you play around with it and try to find something that is the best fit for everybody. For us, it wouldn’t matter if it is now or after Fourth of July. We’re trying to think about players and what might be best for them.”
