Brady Schneider wasn’t afraid to admit that over the past few years, he didn’t practice a ton in the offseason in preparation for the next golf season. But when Schneider decided to dedicate his time over the winter to improving his game and maintaining his swing, he realized the results on the course this season paid dividends.
The Columbus North senior was runner-up in the Conference Indiana championship and medalist at the Greensburg Sectional.
“The main thing in the winter is keeping warm, staying warm. It’s having the swing. I’m not making swing changes or anything, I’m just trying to stay loose and have the feelings of a swing. When the season comes and it is warming up, I can hit the ball outside and let myself practice more,” said Schneider, The Republic Boys Golfer of the Year. “I do regret not putting in the work my freshman, sophomore and junior years, but it is what it is, and I wanted to make the most out of this year. I gave everything I had. I worked hard. It was a lot of fun. I think it was the group of guys pushing me to get better and me seeing it.”
One other thing Schneider noticed in previous years is that he got exhausted entering the last few holes, and it made a difference on his scorecard. To improve upon that, he said he did a lot of running to be in shape.
“You’re walking miles and miles carrying a golf bag, and you get tired,” he said. “So before the season, I did a lot of running to get into shape because I felt like that would get to me a lot toward the end of rounds. Last year, I noticed the last five, six holes were my worst holes. I did a lot of running. That was the main thing. I felt like this year, I was in good shape and ready to go.”
Schneider led the Bull Dogs with a 38.1 average per nine holes played. He was runner-up in the Conference Indiana championship with a 2-over 74 and was sectional medalist with 1-under par 69. He finished with a 77 at the Providence Regional, with the team finishing fourth. His teammate, sophomore Austin Perry, qualified as the third individual on a non-advancing team by winning a playoff shootout on the fourth hole.
Even though he didn’t reach the state finals for one final time, Schneider was proud of how his season went.
“I think I accomplished a lot of goals that I had,” Schneider said. “I think there was goals I didn’t accomplish that I wanted to accomplish, but I went to state my sophomore year (with the team) and played at state and had a pretty good performance my sophomore year. The main goal is always get to state finals. Indiana has a very good state finals for golf. That was a goal, and we came up a little short this year. I put in everything I could. It was hard that we didn’t make it. At least Austin made it. I fell short of some of my goals, and I accomplished a lot of goals at the same time.”
Schneider was the captain of the team this year and was named co-MVP of the team along with Perry at the team’s annual postseason banquet. The main thing Schneider told his younger teammates was to put in the work.
“Brady emerged this year as a leader. With a lot of younger guys in our lineup, Brady took it upon himself to help mentor those kids. I’m really proud with how he did that, especially late in the year,” North coach Doug Bieker said. “Once graduation and everything happened, you could tell that the light really became on for Brady, and he really wanted to get our team to the state finals and have those kids be able to experience that all together as a team. He didn’t quite accomplish that, but he did everything he could. I’m just super proud of him and his leadership this year.”
In the fall, Schneider will attend Central Midwest Carpenters, a trade school located in Greenwood. He hopes to get his real estate license in the future while also playing in golf tournaments on the side, just not collegiately.
“I had a lot of family and friends that have gone the same route, and I talked to all of them and got the best information I could have. I really enjoy construction and carpentry. That’s how I got into it,” Schneider said. “Golf is one of the sports where you don’t have to go to college to succeed, and there’s all kind of amateurs, all kinds of qualifiers. You hear stories every year, guys in the U.S. Open. For me, I’m going to sign up for a lot of amateurs and qualifiers.”
Schneider was pleased with his career as a Bull Dog and will miss being with his teammates and coaches.
“The thing I’m going to miss the most is my teammates and the teammates I’ve had through the years,” he said. “I’ve been blessed to have some of the best teammates and met some of the best people, some of my best friends, lifelong friends I’ll know for the rest of my life. Golf has let me meet so many different people and so many good people. I’ll miss the coaches. I really enjoyed coach Bieker and (assistant) coach (David) Lacey. They’re the best coaches I could ever ask for. Right after the season, it hurt a little bit that it’s never going to happen again. I enjoyed every bit of it.”
