Columbus man arrested for OWI causing death related to July 6 crash in Franklin

JOHNSON COUNTY — A Columbus man was arrested on a warrant stemming from a deadly crash that occurred July 6 in Franklin.

Nearly one week after the crash, Jerrin Alan Staker, 43, was arrested on a warrant for the Level 4 felony charge of causing death when operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

Police say Staker was likely on drugs or medication when his Jeep collided with the passenger car driven by Braden Christopher Robertson, a 29-year-old who moved to Franklin one month ago from Fairfield, Illinois.

At about 7:59 p.m. on July 6, Franklin Police officers were called to a serious vehicle collision at U.S. 31 and Commerce Drive involving two vehicles, the crash report says.

Witnesses at the scene reported that Staker appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed from the north when he struck Robertson’s vehicle, the report says.

Staker also allegedly ran a red light before colliding with Robertson’s vehicle, which was turning left onto Commerce Drive, a crash report says.

The impact caused both vehicles to be dragged to the south of the intersection, coming to a rest in front of Buffalo Wild Wings, the report says.

There were no other occupants in either vehicle, police say.

Staker was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of his injuries. He was arrested on a warrant and taken to the Johnson County Jail after he was released from the hospital on Saturday, said Kirby Cochran, Franklin police chief.

The warrant was filed in Johnson Superior Court 3 on July 11. That day, the court also directed Staker to be held on no bond once he was taken into custody.

The court also set an initial hearing and a bail review hearing for July 21.

A GoFundMe has been set up by Robertson’s family to take care of expenses in the wake of his unexpected death.

Robertson’s friends and family had been “so proud of him for getting a new job and moving to a new area,” according to the GoFundMe’s description.

“He was happy. It only took one month to lose him entirely and shatter our world,” the description says.
