COLUMBUS
James “Jim” D. Wells, 86, of Columbus passed from this life Monday, July 14, 2025, at 6:53 a.m. at his cherished home.
Born on April 14, 1939, in Somerset, Kentucky, Jim was the loving son of the late Abe and Elma Elizabeth Whitis Wells. He shared a blissful marriage of over 66 years with his devoted wife, Nancy K. Moore, after they united in heart and partnership on June 13, 1959.
Jim’s legacy is lovingly carried on by his wife, Nancy, and their daughters, Debra (Larry) Guthrie of Columbus, Pam (Paul) Zimmer of Martinsville, and Karen Carman of Columbus. His spirit continues to live in the joyous laughter of his grandchildren, Zachary (Courtney) Pollert, Jacob Zimmer, Keeton (Cierra) Carman, Kollin (Taylor) Carman; great-grandchildren, Cecelia, Rori, Kalena, Isaiah, Adalyn, and Aiden; siblings, Ellis (Diana) Wells, Janet Smith, Louise (Wally) Roberts, June (Chuck) Corbin, Charlotte (Ken) Hadley, and Linda (Marvin) Harris, who will remember him for his loving-kindness and the pleasant memories they shared. Jim’s extended family of several nieces, nephews, and cousins will forever hold him in their hearts.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in passing by his brother, Steve Wells.
A man of great passion and dedication, Jim contributed to the workforce at renowned establishments such as the Golden Foundry, Essex Castings, and Cummins Engine Company. Jim’s love for fishing was only paralleled by the joy he felt coaching the Ponytails girls’ softball team.
Jim was inducted into the Indiana Softball Hall of Fame and later, the Columbus Softball Hall of Fame. These honors were a testament not only to his skill but also to his character and the influential role he played in the lives of young athletes.
The funeral service will be held at 12 p.m., Friday, July 18, 2025, at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street.
Family and friends may gather for visitation from 10:00 a.m. till time of service at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Cemetery.
