James D. Richards, 88, of Panama City Beach, FL, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2025.
James was born on September 30, 1936 in LaFollette, TN. He served his country for 22 years in the Air Force, followed by 12 years in civil service. James was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal. He also earned his bachelor’s degree from Golden Gate University and master’s degree from Troy State University. In his spare time, he enjoyed maintaining his garden, where he grew roses, oranges and muscadines.
James is preceded in death by his parents, Delis and Vena Richards; brothers, Bernard, Larry and Don; and sister, Lois.
Left to treasure his memory is his wife of 52 years, Sherry, daughters, Brenda Hanley and Lea Laswell (Mark); sons, Matt Scott (Anne Marie), Brian Richards (Terri) and Dave Richards (Amanda); grandchildren. Nathan George (Samantha), Clint Jones (Yvette), Ryan Laswell, Michael Laswell (Lynsey), Alexander Rawnsley (Chase), Mason Tartaglione (Robert), Asher Richards (Summer) and Karma Richards; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Alan Richards (Jackie); and sister, Tina Hale.
A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, with Bishop Tommy Chatman officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
