Olympians, Bull Dogs tested in scrimmages

Columbus East and Columbus North had a chance to test themselves against some formidable opponents Friday night when they played their annual controlled football scrimmages.

The Olympians hosted Whiteland. Both teams scored four touchdowns. East’s scores came on a run by Brody Miller, a pass from Kyson Villarreal to Mykel Jones, a run out of the Wildcat formation by Dallas Dykstra and a pass from Dykstra to Jones.

“I thought we played hard,” East coach Eddie Vogel said. “I know our defensive side of the ball is not happy, but I thought our guys came out and were pretty physical. We had some pretty good plays and some that weren’t very good, which is par for what you’re going to get early in the season. So we’re going watch film tomorrow and try to work on some things that need to improve and try to be better for Week 1 against Bloomington South.”

The Bull Dogs traveled to New Palestine, which is ranked No. 1 in the preseason Class 5A coaches poll. The Dragons scored three touchdowns to one for North. The Bull Dogs’ score came on a 9-yard run by James Scruggs.

Both teams will kick off the regular season Aug. 22. North will host Whiteland, while East visits Bloomington South. The Olympians will host the Bull Dogs Aug. 29.
