NASHVILLE — Columbus North swept the top five places in the girls race and took eight of the top nine spots in the boys race Wednesday to open their cross-country seasons with wins in the Brown County Challenge.
Scoring was based on the combined total of a school’s places of the top three two-person teams. The Bull Dog girls scored a perfect six points to 25 for Silver Creek, 36 for Brown County and 46 for Columbus East.
The North boys scored seven points to 20 for Silver Creek, 35 for Brown County and 41 for Martinsville. The East boys did not compete.
Tristan Works
Emma Lowther and Tristan Works combined to win the girls race in 18 minutes, 40.9 seconds, with each runner covering 2,500 meters (1.55 miles) for a 5K (3.1 miles). Kodi Smith and Rendy Zhong finished second in 19:07.9, while Kylie Brinksneader and Wendy Zhong took third (19:23.1), Adira Sluder and Ainsley Sherlock fourth (19:29.3) and Reece Peeples and Hazel Sasse fifth (19:30.4).
Addie Adams and Ela Robinette led Brown County with a 10th-place finish in 20:42.9. Sadie Hiatt and Izzy Miller took 14th in 22:10.9, and Della Hitchcock and Michaela Smith were 21st in 24:45.7.
East’s Delaney Rogers and Ainslee Shaw finished 18th in 23:12.5. Daphne May and Brooke Newell took 20th in 24:27.4, and Camilla DeVreese and Elizabeth Sztaba were 25th in 27:50.6.

Justin Reckers
North’s Jace Works and Justin Reckers combined to win the boys race in 14:48.1. Denton Sluder and Graham Pumphrey took second in 14:59.6, while Sam Steinmetz and Logan Vanzant were fourth (15:24.0) and Leyton Hottell and Joseph Day fifth (15:44.4).
Brown County’s Eddie Webb and Jacob Webb finished 13th in 16:59.1. Aden Skaggs and Nathan Cumberledge took 15th in 17:15.2, and Xavier Himebaugh and Robert Johnson were 23rd in 19:15.9.
