Mark Pillar to deliver account of Sept. 11 in free community event

A free community event in remembrance of Sept. 11 will be held on Sept. 8 at The Ridge from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Retired Major General Mark Pillar, who served as Air Force 2-Star General, will deliver a personal account of Sept. 11 during the event.

“He was actually in the room with President Bush when a number of decisions were made that morning on Sept. 11,” Folds of Honor Foundation wingman John Fairbanks said. “So it’s just a very informative, very empassioned talk about that date.”

“Remembering 9/11” is held in support of the Folds of Honor Indiana foundation, which raises money for scholarships for children of fallen service members and first responders. Fairbanks said they are holding this not only to honor Mark Pillar and his service, but his late brother Mick Pillar’s service in the Air Force and his work in the Folds of Honor as their Indiana board president.

“… we thought how informative and interesting this could be to the community who have not heard his speech before,” Fairbanks said. “He’s done this a number of times at rotary meetings and Chambers of Commerce around the state and those kind of things, and we just thought this would be a really good opportunity for the Columbus community to hear this as a whole…”

Doors open for the event at 5:30 p.m. The Ridge is located at 2800 Bonnell Road.
