City completes change order for paving projects

City officials have approved the final change order for a project that used Community Crossings Matching Grant (CCMG) program funding and encompassed work to four city streets.

The Columbus Board of Public Works and Safety in February awarded the bid for the work to Dave O’Mara Contractor Inc. after they submitted the low bid $448,440.50. The board this week approved a change order dropping the price by about 4% to $428,918.69 now that it’s wrapped up.

The project had access to up to $297,672 in CCMG funding the city was awarded during the second round of calls for project funds in 2024. The city contributed the same amount to the project using funding from engineering’s annual paving budget, meaning they had access to nearly $600,000 if needed. The CCMG funds that weren’t used will be directed back to the state, City Engineer Andrew Beckort said.

The project saw involve full-depth reclamation on Kenholt Drive, Scott Drive as well as Brian Drive, just off of Indianapolis Road, according to city engineering. Full-depth reclamation is a cost-effective technique involving recycling existing pavement materials to create a new roadway surface.

The other street included in the project—Willowbrook Drive— underwent mill and overlay work.

Beckort previously said a more extensive 4-inch milling, followed by an fresh layer of asphalt, are planned for Willowbrook, from Cessna Drive to Dearbrook Drive. Willowbrook is located within a residential neighborhood southeast of the Columbus Municipal Airport.
