College sports notebook: Ely scores goal; Wolf, White have big debuts; Rumsey, Kiesler solid in season-openers

KJ Ely came off the bench to score DePauw’s final goal Friday to help the Tigers secure a 3-1 women’s soccer win at Manchester.

Ely, a senior from Columbus North, started in the midfield and played 50 minutes in Monday’s 2-1 home win against Greenville.

Friday’s goal was Ely’s second of her collegiate career and the first since her freshman year.

Wolf helps lead Aces to runner-up finish

EVANSVILLE — Kyleigh Wolf made her collegiate cross-country debut Friday by finishing fifth to help lead Evansville to a runner-up team finish in Southern Indiana’s Stegemoller Twilight.

Wolf, a freshman from Columbus North, ran 14 minutes, 17.2 seconds for 4K (2.5 miles) and was the Aces’ No. 2 runner.

Rumsey, White score for Boilermakers

VALPARAISO — Katherine Rumsey and Neal White were the fifth runners for the Purdue women’s and men’s cross-country teams, both of which were runners-up in Friday’s season-opening Winrow-Valparaiso Open.

Rumsey, a senior from Columbus North, finished 14th overall in 18 minutes, 38.26 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles).

White, a freshman from Columbus North, finished 18th in 18:53.7 for 6K (3.8 miles) in his first collegiate race.

Kiesler nets top-10 finish in return

PORTLAND, Ore. — Julia Kiesler finished ninth in the Lewis & Clark Opener Friday to help the Boise State women’s cross-country team to a runner-up finish.

Kiesler, a redshirt sophomore from Columbus North, ran 17 minutes, 55.19 seconds for 5K (3.1 miles) and was the No. 3 runner for the Broncos.

Gilley, Sycamores go 1-2 at Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE — Chloe Gilley recorded three assists and six digs Saturday in Indiana State’s three-set loss to Miami (Ohio) in the Bellarmine Classic.

Gilley, a sophomore from Columbus East, notched one assist and seven digs in a five-set win against SIU-Edwardsville Friday. She had opened with one assist and four digs in a three-set loss to Bellarmine in Friday’s season-opener.
