Olympians shut down Red Devils

Jeffersonville came to Columbus Saturday having put up 23 goals in its first eight games.

Columbus East did not let the Red Devils add to that total. In fact, the Olympians held Jeffersonville to one shot, not on goal, in a 1-0 Hoosier Hills Conference boys soccer victory.

“They had a kid (Elijah Cheeks) who had scored nine goals in seven games, and Eddie Aranda stepped up to the challenge and held him to no shots, so all credit to Eddie, all credit to our back line,” East coach Sam LaVelle said. “We held a tough conference opponent who has been scoring a lot of goals to a single shot, so that’s always good for us to build on moving forward.”

The Olympians (4-3-1, 2-0) scored the game’s lone goal in the 23rd minute. David Sylva took a free kick from 35 yards that went into the box and was headed by Aranda. Emilio Quintero Aguirre then headed it into the net.

“I saw the ball coming my way,” Quintero Aguirre said. “I wasn’t expecting it, but I got a head on it, and luckily, it went in.”

East outshot the Red Devils (6-2-1, 1-1) 12-1, putting seven shots on goal. Ryder Meek did not face a shot on goal in posting the shutout.

“We’d always like to see more goals, obviously,” LaVelle said. “It makes it a little less stressful, but we pulled out a win.”

The Olympians will try to remain unbeaten in the HHC when they host Bedford North Lawrence Tuesday at BCSC Complex.

“We could do better, but we’re getting there,” Quintero Aguirre said. “We’re fortunate to be in first (in the conference), but we still have a couple games to go, so hopefully we can finish it out.”
