Looking Back – Sept. 15

Rick Caldwell, who spent two years as commander of the Indiana AMVETS organization, was presented with the Sagamore of the Wabash Award on Sept. 10, 2015, in Columbus for his work on behalf of veterans. Joining Caldwell, second from left, were his wife, Karen Caldwell, State Rep. Milo Smith of Columbus; and Russ Eaglin, deputy director for the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs, who made the presentation on behalf of Gov. Mike Pence.

Columbus’ Rick Caldwell was presented with a Sagamore of the Wabash Award during a state job fair for veterans at the Columbus Learning Center. The award was presented by Russ Eaglin, deputy director of the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Jennings County Sheriff’s Department got its first police dog, Beau, a black Labrador retriever. Beau trained in drug detection at the Elkhorn K-9 Training Center in Seymour.

1975

Columbus women’s slow pitch softball team the Ponderosa Playmakers placed second in the open division in a tournament sponsored by the Fort Wayne Turners Athletic Club. Shortstop Diane Timbrook was named MVP.
