Woodmen blank Olympians

Playing its fourth game in seven days, Columbus East had little energy or intensity to start out Monday’s girls soccer game with Greenwood.

It allowed the Woodmen to net a string of three goals in a three-minute span in the first half to hand the Olympians a 5-0 loss.

East is now on a three-game losing skid and is in the middle of stretch of playing nine games in 17 days.

The margin could have been larger if it wasn’t for two missed penalty kicks from Greenwood.

“It was the same thing with Floyd Central (Saturday) — heat and the fact that we have so many games back-to-back,” East coach Grace Manning said. “Not that I would expect to win all of those games, but something much closer. Like with Batesville (Thursday), I thought we brought it with it 4-2 match. I would imagine if we had more time in between games, this game and the last game (against Floyd Central) would be more like Batesville.”

It didn’t take long for the Woodmen (5-3-1) to change the scoreboard when it was rewarded a corner kick. Bryn Shotts was on the receiving end of the corner and finished in the net to lead 1-0.

Greenwood scored a span of three goals in three minutes. Katia Loper netted the first of her two goals in 29th minute with her shot just inside the right post. Loper added a goal in the 31st minute, as well. Lillian Rollings scored the goal in between in the 30th minute, and the Woodmen led 4-0 at the break.

The final goal of the game was scored in the 45th minute, with Rollings netting her second goal.

East (2-7) has another back-to-back this week when it visits Hoosier Hills Conference foe Jennings County Wednesday and has a Bartholomew County matchup Thursday at Hauser.
