The Columbus East and Columbus North girls golf teams will have to better its best 18-hole scores of the season by a lot if either team hopes to have a chance at advancing to the regional.
The Olympians and Bull Dogs will be huge underdogs of advancing out of the Bloomington North Sectional at Cascades Golf Course Monday.
East and North haven’t broken the 200 barrier for nine holes or 400 for 18 holes all season. They finished the regular-season with their best nine-hole scores of the season Tuesday when the Olympians won 216-221 at Otter Creek.
At least three teams in the sectional have gone lower, including Bloomington North, Bloomington South and Martinsville. The top three teams and the top three individuals from a non-advancing team will qualify for the Franklin Regional Sept. 27 at The Legends.
“We have our ups and downs, but we’re a young team,” East coach LaDonna VanDeventer said. “We’re still trying to get better, so hopefully, our short game will show up on Monday. That’s what we’ve been working hard on.”
The Olympians have only one senior in Amaylie Walsh. Sophomore Abby King shot a season-best 45 Tuesday, and if she can double that score for 18 holes Monday, she may have a chance to advance as an individual.
“If we can’t get out as a team, I definitely hope Abby or even Amaylie can get out,” VanDeventer said.
Hauser, which has three individuals, one short of the number needed to score as a team, and Brown County, will be paired with East. North is paired with Bloomfield, a school new to girls golf.

The Bull Dogs, who have no seniors, improved their 18-hole season best by 38 shots when they played in the Bloomington North Invitational last week at Cascades. They will look to make another improvement Monday.
“We played well last Saturday, so I hope to continue to grow on that and get some good learning experience and see what we can do,” North coach Alexandria Weisheit said. “We’re just building toward next year and growing. I’ve told the girls, our freshmen have 900-plus days to continue to work and to get ready, so I look forward to seeing their growth over the winter and next summer and spring and seeing them grow over the next three years.”
