After managing a scoreless tie with Class 3A No. 8 Bloomington South Wednesday, 3A No. 20 Columbus North had a chance to share the Conference Indiana girls soccer title with the Panthers with a win against Terre Haute South Saturday at BCSC Soccer Complex.
The Bull Dogs didn’t let the opportunity pass them by. They scored a goal in each half to post a 2-0 victory and claim a share of the title.
“We would have liked to have won on Wednesday and won it outright, but Bloomington South is a great team,” North coach David Young said. “We talked about bringing the intensity the first minute and actually playing 80 minutes, similar to what we did on Wednesday. We played the full 80 minutes, and I feel like the girls did that again today. I’m proud of the girls. I’m happy with them.”
The Bull Dogs (11-2-2, 4-0-1) got on the board in the 11th minute when sophomore Grace Bethuram took a pass from Avery Baker and rifled a shot over the Braves keeper’s head from 30 yards.
“Coach and I have been working on it in practice and outside of practice, and I’m just thankful that he was able to help me achieve that,” Bethuram said.
The second goal showed just as much flair. Junior Evelyn Lopez gathered a rebound from a shot off a defender and rocketed a side-bicycle kick from the top of the box.
“I never actually thought I would ever score a goal like that,” Lopez said. “But I’m really proud of myself and the way the team played today. I’m very thankful for today.”
North outshot Terre Haute South 16-4, putting seven shots on goal to one for the Braves (12-4, 3-2). Danika Hoehn recorded one save for the Bull Dogs.
The conference title is the first for most of the current North players.
“We haven’t done it in a couple of years and to do it for the seniors and our coaches and everyone, it’s super exciting to be able to do it with this team,” Bethuram said.
“We were all playing hard today, playing it as a family, doing it for the seniors, for each other, for coach,” Lopez added. “It was just a really good game.”
