Columbus East ran into one of the state’s top girls soccer teams Tuesday in an 8-0 loss to Class A No. 1 Oldenburg Academy.
The Olympians held the Twisters to two goals in the first half but allowed six in the second half.
“I’m happy with the first half. The second half was a little rough,” East coach Grace Manning said. “I can’t be too mad given the circumstances.”
Oldenburg (14-0-1) scored an early goal in the fourth minute when Claire Niese got the Twisters on the board. The Olympians (5-10) allowed only one goal over the next 40-minute stretch. That came in the 25th minute when Gina Grote converted a goal off of a corner kick to make it 2-0.
In the second half, the Twisters added three more goals in a five-minute stretch. Niese added her second goal of the game in the 44th minute. Lydia Niese added two more goals within a 30 second stretch in the 49th minute to make it a running clock with a 5-0 lead.
Sophia Leising added a goal for Oldenburg in the 56th, and Kathryn Mack added a goal in the 69th minute for a 7-0 lead. Lydia Niese capped off the night with a hat trick in the 70th minute.
East wraps up the regular season with a Hoosier Hills Conference home matchup with Seymour Thursday. The Olympians will then face off with 3A No. 7 Center Grove Oct. 9 in the Greenwood Sectional.
