County to repave Dunn Stadium parking lot

The parking lot at Dunn Stadium will soon receive a new overlay.

The Bartholomew County commissioners on Monday awarded a bid to Case Construction to do an overlay project at Dunn Stadium for $82,360.

Rich Day, county parks director, said the work comes just as Dunn Stadium is seeing a flurry of activity after the completion of 12 new pickleball courts on site earlier this year. He noted that last weekend there was pickleball, softball and BMX going on simultaneously.

The work involves sweeping and cleaning the asphalt, the application of a tack coat wedge and an inch-and-a-half overlay, according to Day. The 48,596 square-foot parking lot will also be restriped, followed by a seal coat.

Day said the idea is that the parking lot will get its new overlay before the fall season is over.

The county also got bids from Milestone Contractors and DC Construction at $84,656 and $97,765.50, respectively, but those bids included an inch-and-a-half of milling that Day said was not included in the specifications the bids were to be based on.

Funding for the overlay will come out of two different funds: the parking lot fund and the non-reverting fund, Commissioner Carl Lienhoop, R-District 2, said.

The 12-court pickleball facility, which is free to the public, opened over the summer and the commissioners have said repeatedly how they are pleased with the increased activity in the area.

The pickleball project was funded with $608,660.49 in federal American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding.

It was originally expected to be finished in October, but permitting complications arose because the property is owned by the county, but within the city limits. There had been confusion about which entity oversaw the final say about stormwater reviews and drainage requirements, county officials said.
