Nexus Park to host girls wrestling event this weekend

A girls wrestling tournament is expected to draw 1,400 competitors and 2,800 spectators from 17 states this weekend to NexusPark.

The city is hosting a the War of the Roses Midwest Nationals, a preseason event for the War of the Roses series. NexusPark Fieldhouse manager Martavius Mims said more than 60 teams will be traveling from as far away as Florida and Kansas.

Weigh-ins are Friday evening, and matches take place Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $20 for one day or $35 for both days.

“It will be a pretty big deal as far as economic impact, as far as staying at hotels and eating at restaurants here in the local community,” Mims said.

Mims said the tournament will use 27 mats spread over the basketball courts and the turf portion of the fieldhouse.

“They will use all 25 portable bleachers, but they have also been promoting that individuals bring in their lawn chairs, as well,” Mims said.

This will be the second big wrestling tournament of the year for NexusPark, which hosted the Indiana State Folkstyle Tournament for both boys and girls in March. That event featured 2,600 athletes.

Nexus Park also will be hosting some big events throughout the fall and winter, including an indoor baseball and softball season that starts at end of October and a 7-on-7 football league on Sundays that begins in February. The 2026 LR Productions Gymnastics event will take place in February, and next year’s Indiana State Folkstyle Tournament for wrestling will be in early March.
