The Columbus North boys tennis team has been inconsistent in some spots this season, but the Bull Dogs appear to be clicking on all cylinders at the right time.

No. 23 North rolled to victory in its own sectional, beating Columbus East in Thursday’s semifinals and Greensburg in Friday’s title match, both by 5-0 scores.

The sectional title is the 14th in a row and 48th overall for the Bull Dogs.

“I think overall, scorewise, it was about how I thought it would go,” North coach Kendal Hammel said. “We were pushed a little bit. I was pleased with what everybody did tonight, especially at 2 and 3 singles. They’re playing some really good tennis right now — not that everybody isn’t — but they’re really starting to come around right now.”

Alek Devidze beat Mason McNulty 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for the Bull Dogs (10-6).

“I didn’t play too good,” Devidze said. “I’m definitely going to have to step up my play in the next few matches.”

North’s Max Wei topped Will Weber 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Jace Branham defeated Brady Sanders 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

The quickest match came at No 1 doubles, where Teddy Littrell and Vince Sasse beat Reece Champan and Wade Schutte 6-1, 6-1.

“I think we went out there and did our best today,” Sasse said. “The forecast wasn’t looking too great. The weather was affecting my play a little bit, but I went out there and did the best I could day.”

“We went out there, and we were fixing up some things, fine tuning for later on in the state draw,” Littrell added. “I think we played pretty well, and we’re looking forward to regional.”

The Bull Dogs’ Luca Devidze and Jaishil Padmanabhan topped Jaxson Phillips and Max Buening 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

North will host the regional Tuesday and Wednesday. The Bull Dogs will face Southwestern (Hanover) in Tuesday’s semifinals.

“It’s going to get a little tougher each round,” Hammel said.
