North boys beat best from state, midwest in XC Town Twilight meet

TERRE HAUTE — Jace Works finished second individually to lead Columbus North to the team title in the Boys Race of Champions at Saturday night’s Nike XC Town Twilight meet at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, site of the state finals.

The Bull Dogs scored 115 points to 187 for runner up Noblesville. Plainfield (Illinois) North and Plainfield (Illinois) South tied for third with 229 points, followed by St. Louis University (240), Columbia (Missouri) Rock Bridge (273), Bloomington North (282) and Carmel (344).

Works ran 14 minutes, 57.2 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Denton Sluder finished 23rd in 15:22.3, while Graham Pumphrey was 36th (15:35.3), Justin Reckers 40th (15:37.5), Joseph Day 44th (15:40.0), Logan Vanzant 50th (15:44.5), Sam Steinmetz 66th (15:51.3) and Rohan Norris 80th (15:59.5).

Hauser’s Nolan Dailey finished 78th in the Boys Championship race 15:58.4.

In the Girls Race of Champions, North finished 15th with 483 points. Carmel won with 74 to 143 for Mt. Prospect (Illinois) and 154 for Bloomington South.

Tristan Works led the Bull Dogs with a 28th-place finish in 18:28.83. Emma Lowther took 76th in 19:12.68, while Kodi Smith was 118th (19:36.19), Sydney Madden 172nd (20:02.98), Kylie Brinksneader 189th (20:11.77), Adira Sluder 211th (20:29.79) and Rendy Zhong 217th (20:35.15).

Meanwhile, North also won the Boys Open Blue and Girls Open Blue races.

The Bull Dog boys scored 52 points to 69 for runner-up Brownsburg. Hauser finished 18th with 660 points, and Brown County was 20th with 688.

North’s Drew Hoeflinger (16:53.02), Garrett Perfetto (16:55.33), Leyton Hottell (16:56.20) and Levi Carothers (16:56.67) finished seventh-through-10th. Jackson Schneider took 20th in 17:05.41.

Jace Wright led the Jets with a 30th-plae finish in 17:12.46. Max Moore took 124th in 18:06.49, while Mason Moore was 189th (18:43.00), Braydon McFarland 225th (19:09.66) and Grady Niccum 279th (20:00.53).

Nathan Cumberledge finished 156th in 18:24.60 to lead the Eagles. Eddie Webb took 160th in 18:26.64, while Jacob Webb was 166th (18:31.21), Aden Skaggs 199th (18:52.07) and Xavier Himebaugh 212th (18:57.80).

The Bull Dog girls scored 112 points to 137 for Florence (Alabama). North’s Wendy Zhong finished ninth in 20:13.24, while Hazel Sasse was 14th (20:27.90), Reece Peeples 32nd (20:56.36), Brooklyn Donner 33rd (20:56.66) and Abi Megel 37th (21:02.03).
